COMMUNITY GROUPS

♫ Program will teach PLWAS

to be leaders and advocates

Columbus--Ohio residents living with HIV and AIDS will soon be coming to the state capital to be trained and empowered in the areas of leadership and advocacy.

Hosted by the Ohio AIDS Coalition, the Leadership Training Program will focus attention on the impact that trained people living with or affected by AIDS can have in their communities, their state and nation.

Individuals will receive training in the areas of leadership development, advocacy and activism, organizational skills and network development. OAC will provide ongoing support back in their communities.

Scheduled for the weekend of April 25-27 at the Adams Mark Hotel, this event will be the first of its kind in our state. Organizers say nationally known speakers from AIDS Action Council in Washington D.C. will help facilitate the event, along with professionals from the Ohio Department of Health and other leaders in the Ohio HIV community.

Participants will engage in small group discussions, workshops, and role playing, and take a tour of the Statehouse on Saturday afternoon.

"This program is an opportunity for PLWAS of Ohio and their loved ones to develop the skills necessary to participate

in the decisions that affect the lives, of us all," said Keith Kinder, director of OAC.

Largest Healing Weekend yet

The OAC Healing Weekend Cleveland Committee would like to thank the many individuals from the Cleveland area who helped to make the 36th Ohio AIDS Coalition's Healing Weekend a success. Four times a year for the last eleven years we have held retreats for ever-growing numbers of people with HIV or AIDS. The 36th OAC Healing Weekend was one of the largest yet, with 120 people attending.

As you might imagine, caring for 120 people for three days is a monumental undertaking. Many people donated time, money and products to the Cleveland Committee's efforts. Twenty-five individuals and organization helped to make the weekend a success, and their help was greatly appreciated.

We are now beginning plans for the 1998 Cleveland Committee's Healing Weekend. Financial donations are needed. We are proud to be part of a community that, through their generosity, allows us to continue our work. All donations for the 1998 Cleveland Healing Weekend Committee should be marked as such and sent to the home office in Columbus: Ohio AIDS Coalition, 48 W. Whittier St., Columbus, Ohio 43206-2503

Cleveland-The Pride Festival is approaching, on June 28. We get excited-and busy-around this time. There's so much to do and we have so many ideas about what we can contribute to help make Pride fun, outrageous, interesting, and a good time for all! To make a long story short, the Cleveland Lesbian-Gay Center has a couple of announcements about Pride this year.

The point is, we want to make this year's Pride festival the most colorful, fun, and visible Pride yet. We're going to open up the Center to the community to help with our float and to design signs for yourselves. We don't have set dates yet, but should soon. Please call the Center to find out when you can help.

Center

First, the Pride committee has provided the community with materials for making signs and banners to carry during the parade. They left it all here at the Center so anyone can make colorful signs. There's materials for banners, signs, and decorations. If you want a banner for your community group or just have something to say during the parade, we have materials.

Second, the Center is planning on constructing a float for this year's Pride. We are going to need some help from fun and creative folks. Because June is "Love Makes a Family Month," we're going with a family theme for the Center float. Make sure your family is represented. Come help us out!
